He’s got skillz

Michael Scott, The Office, World's Best Boss

Every other week, I have to complete this boring task of which I will spare you the details.
I always complete it. I always do it well.
Today is the day I am working on it. I’ve been working on it all morning.
Meanwhile, it’s 11:45 and Michael hasn’t done any work.
Oh until just now.
“Hey, Pam, do you have the blah de blah files …”
“I’m working on it right now,” I say cutting him off.
There it is. Michael is such a diligent worker. In three hours and the only thing he has done is ask me if I have done my job yet. That’s management skills.
And he does this EVERY time I work on this project.
Trust me, Michael, you’ll be the first to know when I’m done.

The final countdown

The sales people were on deadline, putting together a booklet of stats and sales figures for the year. Dwight was heading up the project and had decided he needed to have the final OK on all information submitted to the report.

“Do we have something we can replace these charts with?” Dwight demanded in the final hour before the deadline.

“No,” Michael said, annoyed.

“Well then we have a problem because I refuse to run these charts without a source for the numbers.”

“Well who put together the charts?” Michael asked.

“The intern did before he left,” Dwight said, butchering the intern’s name when he tried to pronounce it.

“Well he didn’t make the numbers up. It’s fine. He had documentation.”

“Well Oscar misplaced the original numbers, and we really need to find something to replace the information with.”

Dwight began his quest turning over every rock searching for either the original documents or new statistics he could add to the report. These charts had been part of the report for two weeks and Dwight decides that now, as we’re gearing up to go home, is the appropriate time to bring up his concerns.

And things were looking so good. Looks like another late night at Dunder Mifflin.

Paper push

Oh no. Michael has found me.

Twice a month, Dunder Mifflin has a big paper sales push, and all of the sales reps have to meet a set quota by 5 p.m. every other Tuesday.

Those Tuesdays and the Monday before are particularly hectic around the office. I’m not a salesperson, but it is my job to make sure everything is organized and to finalize the sales paperwork, so I usually end up with the most to do on these days.

Our boss, Michael, likes to try to boost morale on “paper push” days by sharing jokes, gossip and funny things he finds online. He genuinely believes the time lost that he is not working — and therefore that we are not working — as he is sharing these gems is time well spent. That happy workers are productive workers.

But I don’t usually even have time for a lunch break on these days … and lunches generally make me happier than Michael.

One Tuesday a few weeks ago, Michael was in full swing. As of 11 a.m., he’d spent about 40 minutes total at his desk. The rest of the time was spent mingling among the stressed-out sales people and intermittently singing to himself “They call me mellow yellow,” demonstrating how cool and calm he was under such high-pressure situations.
