Confronting Michael

In Entertainment, Humor, Television, The Office, Work on April 2, 2009 at 8:00 am

The Office Pam and Michael

I was so angry at Michael. His conversation with Jan was just so indicative of how unprofessional he is and how little regard he has for those around him.

And what a little child he is.

There was only an hour left of work, so I slept on the whole thing that night. Do I just call Toby and have him deal with it? Do I pull Michael aside and handle it myself?

I decided to do a combination of both. This was why I met with my HR rep. To prepare for situations just like this.

“Can I speak with you privately for a minute, Michael?” I asked motioning him to the conference room the next morning.

“Sure,” he said with a nervous smile as I shut the door.

“OK,” I said. “You need to know that we all can hear everything that you say to Jan on the phone.”

“OK,” he said, turning pink.

“Everything,” I said. “Even when you whisper”

“OK.” Pinker.

“And it’s embarrassing and unprofessional and it has to get toned down now,” I said.

“OK.” He was red now.

“OK?” I said.

“Well I guess the only thing I have to ask is, could you give some examples?”

“Really?” I asked. “You really don’t know?” (Was this guy for real?)

He turned redder.

“The baby voices you do with her, the cooing, and well yesterday was just downright inappropriate.”

He was panicked now.

“I, uh, I can’t think what you mean.”

“Well if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you need to think more while you’re actually talking to her. Because we hear it all.”

“Uhhh OK. Thanks.”

“Thank you.”

I left the conference room beaming. I called Toby from my cell phone outside, and he was pleased with the way I handled the situation and was glad Michael seemed embarrassed and told me to let him know if anything more happened.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the last conversation Michael and I would have about this.

I met with Toby!

Toby and Pam The Office

Before I tell you about the day I drew the line with Michael’s inappropriate office talk, let me say that I finally met with my HR rep!

And it was really cool.

I mean, I don’t know if anything will come of it. But Toby did say he would be in our office more regularly (he works in our corporate building).

And he said he might institute a mandatory manager sexual harassment “retraining” to address the problem with Michael without singling him out. I emphasized that none of Michael’s comments made fme feel threatened or harassed. I was just sick of him bragging about dodging something that should be no big deal.

Getting my concerns on record confidentially (oxymoron anyone?) has really helped me feel empowered to talk to Michael about issues I have with him without fear he’ll try to fire me.

Well he might try, but with HR at my back, it’ll be much harder for him. I’ve heard horror stories about staff members who have offended Michael personally.  And they all no longer work with this company.

So when Michael made an oral sex joke to Jan on the phone… I finally felt like I could do something about it.

A rough month

Me picking up some extra hours at my retail job.

Me picking up some extra hours at my retail job.

It’s been a rough month here at Dunder Mifflin, Scranton.

We shut down four branches. Laid off other workers. And we all just found out we’re getting salary cuts soon.

So if my posts are less frequent, it’s because I’m picking up hours at my second job. Or because I’m using my spare time to job hunt.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. I’ve managed to write a few posts that I’ll try to get up ASAP.

Did I mention I finally got a sit-down meeting with Toby?

More on that gem later.

Love,
Pam

Postponed!

Toby Flenderson

Got an e-mail from Michael on Friday letting us all know that the human resources visit this week was postponed because one of the reps had a death in the family.

I get that. I’m not a cold-hearted person.

However, it wasn’t TOBY who had a death in the family. And I never heard anything from him about rescheduling our one-on-one meeting. A simple “Hey, I’m still planning on meeting up with you whenever we reschedule our visit” would have been nice.

Better yet. “Was the issue you needed to discuss with me serious? If so, we could still meet this week.”

Maybe this is expecting too much?

*sigh* Anyway. Loved the post-Super Bowl show. Really was eye opening. I need to learn to not let bosses frustrate me so much, or someday, they might actually be the death of me.

Loved the beeping stress monitor. Yesterday everytime Michael approached me, I made beeping noises in my head. 🙂

A new HR rep!

In Entertainment, Humor, Television, The Office, Work on November 4, 2008 at 3:37 am

Goodbye Toby

I have an official HR rep again!!! Hooray! And they will be at our office in a few weeks!

Hmmm and this is going on at the SAME time The Office is going to be replacing Holly?!

I told you I work at The Office!

So what do you think is going to happen? Do you think Toby is coming back?

Also, should I flood my poor new HR rep on their first day or ease them into all of these stories?

Don’t forget to VOTE! Happy election day!

Human Resources

So at my office, we don’t have an on-site human resources employee. We have to contact our assigned rep at the corporate offices.

So I’ve been leaving messages and e-mails for Toby for a couple months and wondering why I wasn’t hearing anything back from him.

I asked Angela if she happened to know what was going on.

“Oh, yeah, Toby left the company and they haven’t replaced him yet. And no one bothered to tell us.”

She explained she only found out by accident … though I noted to myself she didn’t bother sharing this information once she obtained it. She said I’d need to contact the head of HR to see what to do.

So I started spreading this news to others in the office.

I approached Michael who was talking at Stanley’s desk.

“Hey guys. I just found out Toby left the company and no one told us.”

Michael laughed and grinned a bit.

“What?” Stanley asked.

“Yeah,” I continued, “I had been sending him e-mails for a couple months and never heard back from him and just found out it was because he quit.”

“Well it’s funny you didn’t get one of those response things to your e-mails,” Michael said.

“Yeah,” I agreed, knowing he meant an automatic reply one can set up on their e-mail account.

Michael felt he needed to explain. “You know, like the one we set up for you …”

“Yup I know what you mean, Michael.” I interjected.

“…when you changed e-mails after you got married.”

“Yup. Exactly.” I said.

“… Or, you know, like if someone goes on vacation and they want to…”

“Michael! I know what you mean!” I said a little too forcefully.

“Well, yeah, I’m just surprised you didn’t get one of those,” Michael said, a little bruised.

Why do I find it so hard to talk to this guy?
